The 2017 DWCU C.A.T. Officers

The DWCU Citizenship Advancement Training (CAT) Officers for school year 2017 – 2108 had the Pinning of Ranks together with their Parents last August 25, 2017 at 10:00 o’clock in the morning. The said activity had the theme “DWCU CAT Officers: Duty Before Honor, Honor Before Power.” It was started with a prayer led by Hanna Beanca V. Corpuz, S3 Intelligence Officer and a welcome remarks given by Jansen Carl O. Bautista, the Corps Executive Officer.

After the pinning of ranks, Maria Adelaida T. Gerola, the Corps Commander addressed the students, teachers and parents and her fellow officers. She said that, “To be an officer connotes discipline, responsibility and service. We assure you to help the school to spread discipline and to work for the welfare of the community.”

Fr. Roberto J. Ibay, SVD, also gave his message, congratulating and thanking the C.A.T. Officers. He said, “Rank is not just power and authority. It is about service, duty and honor. The more you serve, the more you protect the common good, the more you earn authority and credibility.”

The program continued with a presentation prepared by the CAT Officers and it was ended by a prayer and blessing.

 

CLASS FEAST DAYS WITH A MISSION TO FEED THE NEEDY

Mr. Jay-R Soriano, Grade 9-Leviticus Class Adviser who spearheaded the Feeding Program sponsored by the Grade 9 Students

Feast day has been an annual celebration of every class in Divine Word College of Urdaneta. This is the day the students have been waiting for; to have a break with their academic stuff, to prepare foods and games, and to have a good time with their classmates.

This is not just a day of having fun, but also a day students, together with their adviser, shared their blessings with the children of Brgy. Bayaoas, Urdaneta City, Pangasinan.

The Leviticus class celebrated their feast day, together with their adviser, Mr. Jay- R D. Soriano last August 24, 2017. The celebration commenced with a mass at 8:45 AM presided by Fr. Roberto J. Ibay, SVD, the President of Divine Word College of Urdaneta, to give them a blessing for the whole day activities for the feeding program. There were 30 children accompanied by their guardians from Brgy. Bayaoas and each received gifts from different sponsors. The program was hosted by Paulin Mae Manzano, a grade 9 student. The feeding program started with the prayer led by Nadine Lucero followed by a welcome remark by Mr. Louise Lorian. In that program, there were games prepared by the students. The kids were very happy with their experience though some did not win the game. After the games, the food was served by the students of Grade 9 – Exodus, Genesis and Levitus Class It was a happy snack with sandwich, spaghetti, juice, yoghurt, biscuits, and hotdog with marshmallows.

It was such a good feeling to see those children with a big smile on their faces. They appreciated the foods and simple gifts they received given by the students and other sponsors. Truly, feast day is a breakthrough; the students not only enjoyed but also learned from the experience.

Symposium on Anti-Bullying Act of 2013

Symposium on Anti-Bullying attended by DWCU Students

Bullying is one of the problems we face in this day and age specifically in educational institutions. Both schools and workplaces are much more aware of the potential for bullying, and usually have plans and policies in place to manage it. With this, the DWCU organized a Symposium on Anti-Bullying Act of 2013 with a theme: “The DWCU Community Advocates Peaceful Learning to Learners: No to Bullying”. It was facilitated by Mr. Marione A. Cayabyab. The said affair was held last August 14, 2017 at St. Michael Gymnasium. The symposium started with an opening remark given by the Principal of Elementary Department Ms. Carolina T. Sayapen. The symposium was divided into three sessions with one hour allotted time for each session. For the first session the participants were the Grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 St. Bernadette and St. Cecilia. While for the second session the participants were the Grade 8 St. Agnes, Grades 9 and 10 St. Francis and St. Joseph. And for the last session the participants were the Grade 10 St. Arnold, Grades 11 A and B, Grade 12 and the College students.

Mr. Marione A. Cayabyab starts the program with an activity that really captures the attention of everyone. He shared his ideas and knowledge about the Republic Act 10627 Sec.II or the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013. He encouraged every single learner to avoid bullying. As what he said on the said affair, “We are losing our identity, our relationship to God and to other people, and our dreams as well when we bully someone.” He gave emphasis on how do we manage bullying in any form of it. It is truly a remarkable day for the learners and educators as well since it is refreshment for them and to think that bullying is not good. At the end of the said affair, Mrs. Joelita M. Bernabe together with Mrs. Marissa Sanchez was tasked to give the certificate of appreciation to Mr. Marione Cayabyab.

In the utmost desire of the educators of DWCU to deliver quality education to the learners, a classroom management workshop was organized for them. It was facilitated by Dr. Reynald Mamasig, a DWCU Alumnus Batch ‘85. The said academic activity was held last August 11, 2017 at the DWCU Conference Hall. The workshop started with an opening remark given by the school President Fr. Ibay, SVD. He said, “Classroom management styles of teachers can be depicted along two dimensions (Baumrind, 1971): type of control exercised over students, and degree of involvement of teachers with students. Furthermore, in his welcome address, Fr. Ibay mentioned about the authoritative, the authoritarian, the permissive, and the indulgent style of classroom management.

Dr. Reynald Mamasig shared about the importance of creating and establishing an engagement with the students to have an effective classroom management. He encouraged the educators to employ varied means/style of greeting the learners to establish a connection with them. He said that learning is fun when there is participation and contextualization of the different concepts and strategies employed. The speaker also reminded the educators that they have a mentoring role and not just imparting knowledge. With this word, He said that teaching is an unconditional concern, it exudes meaningful sacrifice, it is impactful and paradoxical. He also emphasized that teaching needs to have vision, inclusivity, community and emotion (V.I.C.E)

Fr. Venerando Yator, SVD the DWCU Campus Minister was tasked to give the certificate of appreciation to Dr. Mamasig.  Mrs. Marlyn Laroco, the High School Principal  thanked the facilitator. She reiterated the value of having a vision before entering into the classroom and likewise the relevance of transforming the classroom as a class home to easily facilitate classroom management and ultimately to achieve quality education for the learners.

BANAL NA MISA SA BUWAN NG WIKA

SA DWCU

Isang Banal na Misa ang ginanap ngayong Agosto 4, 2017 sa pagsisimula ng pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng Wika na may temang “Filipino: Wikang Mapagbago.” Ang Banal na Misa ay may temang “Si Hesus ang Salitang Nagkatawang Tao” na pinamunuan ni Padre Leonardo P. Hiquiana, SVD, House Praeses, at pinangunahan ng mga mag-aaral mula sa Elementarya. Si Padre Hiquiana rin ang nagbigay ng Homiliya kung saan isang dokumentaryo ang ipinalabas na may pamagat na “Sa Kambas ng Lipunan (Canvas of Society)” ni Joey Velasco kung saan ipinakita dito si Hesus na Salita na nagkatawang tao na patuloy na nakikita at nararamdaman sa buhay ng mga taong nahihirapan. Ipinahayag ni Padre Hiquiana na ang salita o wika ay mapagbago kung ito ay nagbibigay buhay at tumutulong sa mga taong hindi pinapansin ng lipunan.

Pagkatapos ng pagdiriwang ng banal misa, naganap ang pagtatalaga sa tungkulin ng mga nahalal na pinuno ng iba’t – ibang organisasyon gaya ng Supreme Pupil Government, mula sa Elementarya, Supreme Student Government mula sa Sekondarya at College Supreme Council mula naman sa Kolehiyo, gayundin ang mga nahalal na opisyal sa bawat klase at klub o samahan ng Divine Word College of Urdaneta. Ang Pagtatalaga sa tungkulin ng mga opisyal ay pinangunahan ni Padre Roberto J. Ibay, SVD, ang Presidente ng DWCU.

DWCU Nutrition Month 2017

The celebration of the Eucharist with the theme “Jesus the bread of Life: Nourished by Him Gawing Habit for Life”, opened up the Nutrition Month activities for the year 2017 . The Nutrition Mass was held last July 7, 2017 at St. Michael Gymnasium at 8 AM. Fr. Roberto J. Ibay, SVD, the DWCU President emphasized that to be healthy, to be in good shape is to recognize Jesus as the Bread of Life. He also said that Health is wealth, wealth is health and Nutrition Month Celebration is a special time to go back to this basic affirmation of life.

The College Department was incharge of the liturgy during the said celebration. Within the mass, the birthday celebrants for the month of June to July were also introduced through a video presentation and the Mass Presider Fr. Ibay offered a prayer for them. After the mass, fruit carving and cooking contests were introduced and facilitated by the Class Advisers headed by the Mr. Jay-R Soriano.

Despite the continuous rain last July 28, 2017, the DWCU pushed through with the culmination of the Nutrition Month Celebration for this school year 2017 – 2018. This year’s Nutrition Month theme is “Healthy Diet, Gawing Habit for Life”. The students from High School and Elementary Departments gathered at the St. Michael Gymnasium for the said culmination event. Ms. Marjorie Gonzales, the SSG Religion Coordinator of the High School Department led the culmination with an opening prayer followed by the welcome address given by Ms. Carolina T. Sayapen, the Pre-school and Elementary Principal.

Fr. Roberto J. Ibay, SVD, the DWCU President stated on his message for the Nutrition Month that in order for us to practice or live the 2017 Nutrition Month’s theme “Healthy Diet, Gawing Habit for Life”, we need to BELIEVE, SUCCEED and ACHIEVE! Believe that health is wealth, believe that our wealth is having a sound body and a sound mind. Succeed is to commit ourselves with passion to be always in good shape, eating and promoting healthy food here in our school and in our families; and to ACHIEVE our theme is to work together as a family and as an educational community to have a healthy diet. He further stated that “when you believe you succeed, when you succeed you achieve!”

The theme “Healthy Diet, Gawing Habit for Life” were expressed through different competitions – Fruit Carving, Cooking, Nutrijingle and Zumba. Certificates of Appreciation and Recognition were awarded to the winners of the said contests. Mrs. Marlyn Laroco, the High School Principal gave the closing remarks and a prayer and blessings was given by Fr. Ibay to end the celebration.

DWCU HOSTS CEAP REGION 1 CONVENTION

More than one thousand (1,000) delegates from different provinces of Region 1 attended the CEAP Regional Convention held at Divine Word College of Urdaneta last July 22, 2017. The said activity started with a mass at 8:30 AM presided by Rev. Fr. Numeriano A. Gabot, Jr., Vicar-General of the Diocese of Urdaneta. At 9:00 AM, Fr. Crisanto Draculan, the Superintendent of the Diocesan Schools of Urdaneta gave his sincere welcome to the participants. Msgr. Manuel S. Bravo, Trustee-President, CEAP Regional 1 presented the overview of the assembly. Dr. Everlita N. Quinto, Trustee-Secretary of CEAP Region 1 was tasked to present the Diocesan delegates and religious schools to the assembly.

The CEAP President Fr. Joel E. Tabora, SJ, was also present, inspiring and motivating the different CEAP Schools of Region 1 to continue pursuing excellence as a school and as a Catholic Institution. “As a Catholic school immersed and rooted in the society, with its challenges, it has the mission to make an impact in the society,” highlighted by Fr. Tabora.

Most Rev. Socrates B. Villegas, DD, Archbishop of Lingayen-Dagupan was the keynote speaker of the convention. His message revolved around the theme “Communio: Building and Sustaining Communities for Life.” Archbishop Villegas emphasized that “Communion is first and foremost a communion with Christ and Church. Communion is citizenship, communion is compassion, courtesy and communion is for life.”

Moreover, the Executive Director of FAPE, Ms. Rhodora Angela A. Ferrer, updated the delegates on PEAC & FAPE achievements and plans. In the afternoon, Fr. Elmer G. Dizon, Vice President of CEAP gave an input on Phil Catholic Schools Standard (PCCS) to the members of the convention. Atty. Joseph Noel Estrada, the CEAP legal counsel talked about the legal cases confronting the Catholic Schools. The closing remarks was given by Fr. Cirilo Ortega, SVD, Vice Trustee, Region 1 and closing prayer and blessings was given by Fr. Roberto J. Ibay, SVD, President of DWCU. The convention ended at 5:00 PM. It was indeed a concrete experience of communion among the catholic schools in Region 1.

DWCU SUPREME STUDENT GOVERNMENT SY 2017 – 2018

ELECTION OF THE OFFICERS OF THE SUPREME STUDENT GOVERNMENT (SSG) FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2017 – 2018

The election occurred last Friday, July 7, 2017. A day before such election, the different candidates from the two parties namely Socialized and Unified Leaders of New Generation (SULONG) and Peers Offering and Wellness in Education and Responsibilities (POWER) had the Meeting de Avance at the St. Michael Gymnasium from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM. The candidates introduced themselves and expressed their dream to serve the school inviting their fellow students to cast their votes to fulfill such commitment.

Last Monday, July 10, 2017, after the flag ceremony, Ms. Marilyn A. Abenes, the SSG Adviser, announced the elected officers before the students, teachers, and Administrators. At that moment, Bill Henry Hernaez, Grade 12 student, the elected SSG President expressed his sincere gratitude for the trust and confidence he received and likewise his commitment to serve the school as a leader.

Ms. Marilyn Abenes extended her congratulations to the new set of officers motivating them to give their best in serving their fellow students. She encouraged them to work together so that they could easily realized the task entrusted to them for the benefit of the whole educational community.

Fr. Roberto J. Ibay, SVD, the DWCU President also ventilated his gratitude and congratulations to the newly elected SSG Officers. Likewise, he offered a prayer & blessing to them. Fr. Ibay asserted that their position and authority are not meant for their personal upliftment but they are gifts given to them by God to be used and shared for the good of DWCU Community.

The DWCU-PTA General Assembly was held last July 8, 2017 at the DWCU St. Michael Gymnasium. The assembly started at 8:40 in the morning. Fr. Roberto J. Ibay, SVD, gave the welcome address thanking the Parents & Teachers for their active involvement in delivering quality education for the learners.  He also highlighted the role of the Parents as the first educators for their children.  In his message, he pointed out that DWCU continues to be an excellent school, a Catholic School, and an SVD School. He said that this objective is attained when Parents, Teachers, Students and Administration of DWCU work as a TEAM.

Mrs. Rosemarie Drapiza, the out-going PTA President reported their achievements during their term. She also took such opportunity to thank the Parents & Teachers for their unselfish support to their projects as an association. “I have felt your help and this motivated me to serve our institution for the benefit of our children,” said the out-going PTA President.

The said assembly ended with an Oath Taking of the PTA newly elected officers for SY 2017 – 2018 together with the Parents-Teachers Classroom Officers. The administering officer was Fr. Roberto J. Ibay, SVD, DWCU President. Mr. Neil Tablada, the current PTA President said that, “There is a joy in serving DWCU for it is my Alma Mater and the school of our children!”

FR. ROBERTO J. IBAY, SVD – INSTALLED AS THE NEW DWCU PRESIDENT

June 22, 2017- the DWCU Community gathered to celebrate the installation of Fr. Roberto J. Ibay, SVD as the DWCU President, in a Eucharistic Celebration with the theme “Witness to the Word: Forming Communion of Communities with Social Responsibility.” The said mass also served as the opening mass for the School Year 2017-2018. Fr. Leonardo P. Hiquiana, SVD, House Praeses, gave a short introduction as he welcomed everyone to the celebration. He also introduced Fr. Venerando J. Yator, SVD as the new Campus Minister of DWCU. Few guests attended including the Diocesan and SVD Priests to celebrate with the new DWCU President. Fr. Edwin Fernandez, SVD, the representative of Fr. Provincial and Chairman of the DWCU Board of Trustees, was the Mass Presider and Homilist.

During the Rite of Installation, Fr. Edwin Fernandez, SVD entrusted the great responsibility of being the President of the Divine Word College of Urdaneta to Fr. Robert.

Symbolic items were handed to Fr. Robert that will guide him in his leadership – the Bible, which will be the source of inspiration and spiritual nourishment for him personally and for the school Community; the toga, hood and robe, as symbols of academic excellence and authority; the DWCU Mace depicting the School Motto – Verbo Veritatis, Verbo Vitae (Word of Truth, Word of Life) and the DWCU flag with its colors of golden yellow and blue.

Fr. Robert J. Ibay, SVD in his response, filled with gratitude, thanked Fr. Vice Provincial for his trust and confidence in him. He said that the Rite of Installation done within the mass affirms and reminds that a leader is a shepherd, a steward and a servant. As a shepherd, he journeys consistently with the people he serves; as a steward, a leader has the authority and power to uplift others and not himself and as a servant leader, the joy and fulfillment lie in doing well for others – the good of DWCU!

Fr. Robert also mentioned his sincere gratitude to the Society of the Divine Word, the DWCU Board of Trustees, for entrusting him the responsibility as the first Alumnus President of DWCU. He also expressed his gratitude to the DWCU Community, Alumni and his Batch mates, his former Basketball Coach and former Educators in DWCU for they have inspired and prepared him to become a Shepherd, a Steward and a Servant Leader.
