Urdaneta City. The Urdaneta Private Schools Athletic Meet (UCPSAM) for this year was held last October 7-9, 2010 with the Divine Word College of Urdaneta as the host among 23 participating institutions. The DWCU was again selected as the venue as she boasts for her excellent sports facilities, a very spacious play ground, a number of badminton courts, a lawn tennis court, three basketball courts, volleyball fields, the oval for tack & field, the full soccer field and most of all the famous St. Michael’s Gymnasium. This year’s theme carries the spirit of the sports competition: “Strengthening Private Schools Through Sports”.

 

The Opening of UCPSAM 2010

 

The opening programme of course was held at the St. Michael’s Gym with Fr. Servasius W. Tethun, SVD ministering the opening prayer to the Holy Spirit for guidance and inspiration. Ms. Cristine Aromin led the Doxology and the Philippine National Anthem. In the absence of the president of the DWCU Fr. Noel Ferrer, SVD the administrative and finance officer delivered the words of welcome to all the participants, coaches, officials, administrators, owners of schools, guests and the Department of Education’s dignitaries and officials. The presentation of delegates was done joyously by the Vice President of UCPSA Mrs. Venus Villanueva. The In-Charge of the Private Schools Mr. Elmo Bernardino likewise delivered a message while Dr. Maria Celia Junio-Fernandez, Ed.D. the schools Division Superintendent lifted up the whole audience with her words of inspiration.

 

 

Lighting of the Torch

 

The oath of sportsmanship then was recited by all the athletes led by Josh Ezra Relatores a Palaro Player 2009, Lawn Tennis from Merryland Montessori High School, Inc. The Homeroom Sports Coordinators took charge of the meaningful Lighting of the Torch. Mr. Louise C. Lorian the President ot UCPSA officially declared the OPENING OF UCPSAM 2010 to the great cheer of the crowd. The students of Froebel Academy then gracefully rendered an Interpretative Dance signalling the end of the opening ceremonies.

After the opening ceremonies the competitions on the following events followed: 1. Selection of Muse, 2. Dance Sports Elementary, 3. Cheering Pre-Elementary, 4. Dance Sports High School, 5. Cheerdance Elementary, 6. Cheerdance High School.

English Olympics

The pupils of Divine Word College of Urdaneta led by Redentor Immanuel B. Ridao, a grade 6 pupil, won gold medals in the Division English Olympics that was held in Urdaneta I Central School last September 30, 2010.

This event, with the theme, “Breaking Barriers through English”, was participated by different schools from both private and public.

In the said event, pupils from grades 1 to 6 participated in different contests. Poem Recitation for grades 1 and 2, Spelling Bee for grade 3, Declamation for grade 4, Read-a-thon for grade 5, which was divided into 3 categories (Team Reading, Storytelling, and Oral Interpretation), and Essay Writing for grade 6 pupils.

Aside from Ridao winning the Essay Writing contest, three pupils from grade 5, namely, Angel Leila Marron, Angela Lorica, and Jennifer Louisse De Leon, won gold medals for the Team Reading contest. While for the Poem Recitation contest, Shaina Mae Cuison did also win the gold medal. Other pupils who also took awards from their respective competitions include Janssen Roselle Obusan (Storytelling, 2nd place) and Carole Kaye Lomboy (Oral Interpretation, 5th place).

Other participants from DWCU who participated in the different competitions of the event include Mitch Aluning from grade 2, Aio Venella Gonzales of grade 3, and Annicka Lesley Marron from grade 4.

The aforementioned pupils who won in their respective contests will represent the Urdaneta City Division in the Regional English Olympics that will be held in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte on October 14-15, 2010.
