DWCU ATTENDS SVD CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION IN ABRA

official100logo[1]The delegation of the Divine Word College of Urdaneta – SVD community, seminarians, administrators, faculty, non-academic personnel and students attended the 3-day Grand Culmination of the SVD Centennial Celebration that started with a “PANGILI” a welcome ceremony at St. Therese of the Child of Jesus Parish in Penarubia, Abra last August 21, Friday.

On the second day, August 22, Saturday the Solemn Thanksgiving Mass was celebrated at the St. James the Elder Cathedral in Bangued. The holy mass was officiated by the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines His Excellency Archbishop Joseph Adams, D.D. with Father Superior General Antonio M. Pernia concelebrated by twenty other Archbishops and bishops and about 250 SVDs and Diocesan Clergy.

President Arroyo attended the mass after inaugurating the   Abra Ugnayan Center at the Provincial Capitol. She was joined in the mass by Abra Representative Cecilia Seares-Luna, Governor Eustaquio Bersamin and Bangued Mayor Dominic Valera.

Thanksgiving MassAn estimated crowd of 3,000 attended the mass composed of priests, nuns, parishioners from 21 parishes of the Diocese of Abra, guests from Taiwan and other faithful from nearby provinces.

The two-hour mass was marked by the blowing of carabao horns to remember the grace-filled history of the SVD in the Philippines. An ethnic dance was also performed during the mass as part of the cultural history of SVD in Abra.

The scriptural readings were also read in Ilokano, Ayug Tingguian, Tagalog and English.

Adams said that one hundred years after the SVD arrived in the Philippines, they came back to Abra to celebrate the beginnings of their roots in the country.

At night was a CULTURAL CENTENNIAL PRESENTATION Cultural Dancewhere our participants from the DWCU went on stage with other Divine Word Colleges here in the Northern Philippines. The presentation was simply entitled THE PHOTOGRAPH which narrates the glorious history of the SVDs for a hundred years of mission in songs, dances, speech choirs and drama presentations.

The third day started with a long and colorful motorcade from the SVD District House in Ubbog to San Isidro (Cagutongan) the cradle of the Philippine SVD.  A prayer service on the tomb of Fr. Juan Scheirmann, SVD was held before entering the town. The CENTENNIAL MASS then was held presided by no other than the SUPERIOR GENERAL ANTONIO M. PERNIA, SVD at the Our Lady of the Pillar Parish Church in San Isidro together with the three provincials: Fr. Jerome Adriatico, SVD (PHN), Fr. Nielo Cantilado, SVD (PHC) and Vice Provincial Fr. Eduardo Rocha, SVD (PHS) with more than a hundred SVDs from all over the world. The celebration ended with an AGAPE where everybody shared the food prepared for the occassion.

The DWCU delegation brought with them the intentions of the whole academic community in two Grand Thanksgiving Masses and a Pilgrimage to San Isidro – the cradle of the Philippine SVD. The Lord the Divine Word showered His Blessings making the grand celebration a great success as we remember the way we were, we rejoice the present blessings and we renew our MISSION.

Honorable Kimi S. Cojuangco the current Municipal Mayor of Sison, Pangasinan generously graced the occasion on the induction of officers of the DWCU-PTA as Guest Speaker and Inducting Officer last Saturday, August 8, 2009 at the St. Michael Gymnasium of the DWCU, Urdaneta City.  Hon. Kimi in her message highlighted the role of the PTA  and her full support to the education of our children:

“In my heart, there is no challenge greater or more vital to the future of our country and our children as this effort to fortify the foundations on which our schools function for the upliftment of each child.  I see the PTA as among our most effective tools for maintaining community consensus about the value of education – an institution that goes back to the very beginnings of our history and one which I wholeheartedly support.”

The programme of activities opened with a celebration of the Word and the Eucharist with Fr. Doms Ramos  as the presider and homilist together with Fr. Noel Ferrrer the Finance Officer, Fr. Bernard Teneza the Rector of the DWFC, Fr. Judy Banez our missionary from Argentina and Fr. Servas Tethun the Campus Minister from Indonesia who took care of the choir with the second year seminarians. The said mass was sponsored by the PTA Officers as they thank the Lord for the blessings that they received for their beloved children lifting up their intentions for the success of their leadership for this school year 2009-2010.

The whole DWCU Family led by the newly inducted PTA Officers enjoyed the celebration with the different beautiful presentations from the pre-school and elementary pupils as well as the high school students. The parents and the teachers too gleefully rendered their angelic songs and graceful dances. After the stage presentations in honor of the newly inducted officers was the “FINALE” the “AGAPE” when all the parents and teachers opened the food they themselves brought along and shared to everyone. The whole gymnasium looked like that gospel pericope on the feeding of the five thousand where everybody had their fill and there were even more. Indeed God’s grace flow abundantly where there is sharing among the members of the community. It was like a FIESTA again!

The Divine Word College of Urdaneta joined the whole nation in observing the 35th year of Nutrition Month (NM). This year’s celebration was guided by the theme, “Wastong nutrisyon kailangan, lifestyle diseases iwasan!” to highlight the important role of proper nutrition in the prevention and control of diet-related lifestyle diseases.

Last July 28,  Tuesday – all departments of this Catholic institution led by their respective principals and the college dean organized and successfully celebrated the simultaneous culmination program. The Pre-School and Elementary Department took the Janssen Hall as the venue of their festivities. The High School Department having the biggest population in the campus made the St. Michael Gymnasium into a haven of food, music, dances and competitions while the College Department occupied the whole third floor of the main building with their commendable improvized stage and cooking laboratory.
