WHAT LITTLE WE GAVE WENT BACK A THOUSAND FOLD
Right after the typhoon Ondoy that hit Metro Manila last September 26-27 the DWCU academic community organized at once the relief operations to help the typhoon victims down the Metropolitan. The first to bring their goods/donations were the youngest among us; the pre-school and the elementary pupils who were able to gather almost 40 boxes of donations in kind and a good amount of money for medicines. The High School Department and the College Department followed suit to complete the relief drive. Our quick disaster response to the suffering victims was facilitated by the ABS-CBN foundation who brought and distributed our help to suffering kababayans in the national capital.
We thought we have given more than what was expected from us when after a week Super Typhoon Pepeng hit Northern Luzon not sparing Urdaneta, Pangasinan. What little we shared to the victims of Typhoon Ondoy to the NCR went back a thousand-fold that filled our St. Michael’s Gymnasium with relief goods that came as far as Visayas and Mindanao. The help that we shared was practically overshadowed and overwhelmed by the donations that came back. The first wave of donations came from our benefactors through the office of Fr. Bel San Luis, SVD in Manila delivered by a 6X6 truck in a convoy with nine big trucks commandeered by the Philippine Navy. The goods were distributed at once to our neighbors coordinated to our baranggay captain here in Bayaoas, Urdaneta City.
Fr. Bernard Teneza, SVD our rector of the DWFC then right after the Typhoon Pepeng received calls from our confreres for voluntary assistance and even went to Manila to facilitate the delivery of the relief goods coming from the following donors:
- SVD-PHS Mission Secretary Office headed by Fr. Isagani Ehido, SVD and the SVD-PHS on Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation headed by Fr. Anthony Salas, SVD
- The St. Jude SVD community near the Malacanang Palace
- The St. Jude Catholic School and Friends in Manila
- Atty. Tyrone Simafranca
- Mr. Elmer Sarmiento and Company
- Christ the King Mission Seminary
- Fr. Rhing Malbog, SVD
- SVD Friends and Benefactors
- XVD Foundation
In behalf of the recipients we express our heartfelt gratitude to all our donors who went out of their way extending their help to the victims of the recent
typhoon. We thank also the over-all relief coordinator Dr. Trofima M. Pangonilo the head of the Extension and Outreach Program of the Divine Word College of Urdaneta together with the non-academic employees, the faculty members, students, PTA Officers and members headed by Prosecutor Redemptor Ridao, the Campus Pastoral Council, the DWFC seminarians, the SVD community with Fr. Emmanuel Ferrer, SVD, Fr. Servasius Tethun, SVD, Fr Jess del Rosario, SVD and to all who volunteered in packing/repacking and distribution of the relief goods. We extend also our gratitude to the Barangay Captain Dominador Villanueva and to the City Mayor of Urdaneta Hon. Amadeo Perez for the transportation and helping us in identifying those who really need our assistance.
